There is plenty to do in Redlands and the Inland Empire (IE). You definitely need a car to enjoy the many options. High-quality mass transportation is currently only a pipe dream. Folks in the Southland find two lane country roads an anachronism. They assume large congested highways are the norm.

I would be remiss if I didn't note that San Diego and Los Angeles are only an hour or two drive by automobile. The two largest cities in California offer an excellent respite from life (and summer heat) in the IE. If only the traffic wasn't so bad, I would head to the beach more often.

As you travel in the IE, you will notice a wide range of microclimates and ecosystems. You have mountains that offer snow skiing in the winter while just 25 miles away it may be 80 degrees. Everywhere you go in the IE, there is incredible variety and growth.

I was born in San José, lived in San Francisco and Austin and now find Redlands my home. This unique community of about 70,000 is wonderful because it maintains its charm. It has a lot to offer families and businesses moving here from around the world.

Redlands is known for their tasty oranges, well-maintained Victorian homes and a vibrant downtown. You can spot my wife and I most Sundays cycling in this area while enjoying the views and coffee shops. No ubiquitous malls and tract homes in downtown Redlands. It's great to know that this community, like Riverside, is not destroying their legacy.

I enjoy living in the IE because the weather is great and the people are friendly. I usually spend my off hours at the library, bookstore and as you can guess, the coffee shop. If I am in the mood for more excitement, I can always go to Riverside, Palm Springs, the nearby Indian casinos (dancing) the mountains or the coast. You can live out your California dream in the IE. Free Internet access, a vintage garden, an excellent assortment of books and a sleepy staff. What is not to like. Yes, the building is historic and it's located near downtown.

Augie's Coffee Shop

Augie's has young and friendly owners who offer good coffee, pastries and free Internet access. At Augie's you will find an interesting mix of students and professionals. This small coffee shop has casual indoor and outdoor seating and is located in downtown Redlands.

Barnes & Noble Booksellers

They have been banished to the Citrus Mall on the outskirts of Redlands. You know them for their books at full retail, Starbuck's Coffee and for being at the forefront of the ubiquitous strip-mall scene. I love this place.
